Cigarette smoke contains many substances that are harmful, irritating, and toxic to human health. Activated carbon filters facilitate the removal of carcinogenic and other toxic components that cannot be eliminated with ordinary carbon-free filters. Activated carbon is used to trap many substances in cigarette smoke, including small-molecule aldehydes, cyanides, ketones, hydrocarbons, and molecules such as pyridine.
